What Is A Split Bedroom Floor Plan?

A split bedroom floor plan is a popular home design where the secondary bedroom(s) sit on the opposite side of the home from the master bedroom. Typically they are separated by common areas such as the living room and kitchen.

Don’t Build Until You See These 360+ Single Story Dream Home Designs

While touring homes in Michigan, we had the opportunity to check out one of these amazing split bedroom designs. Commodore Homes model 2LM-1030 was on display at Fremont Homes in Fremont, Michigan. This particular modular home had a pretty unique split bedroom layout that we haven’t seen much of, where the kitchen sat towards the front of the home and the living room towards the back.

This also adds to the character of the home by giving the look of a recessed entry way, though it just sits next to the protruding garage. The porch is a nice size with an over hang that gives ample protection from the elements as you try to enter the home.

As you walk around to the back of the home there is a sliding glass door that leads out from the dining room, as well as a number of other windows peering out from the living room and one of the secondary bedrooms that sits on the back of the home.

Stepping Inside This Split Bedroom Home Design

Kitchen

As you step inside this split bedroom modular home you are greeted with a foyer. To the right of the foyer is an arched entryway that leads into the kitchen and at the end of the foyer is a nice deep coat closet before entering into the living room.

We will start in the kitchen because I absolutely love the design of it. First off, it is hickory heaven! All the cabinets and drawers are made of hickory. To the left, facing the living room is a semi corner counter with a small opening looking into the living room, with a raised bar on the opposite side. To either side are a couple of upper cabinets and at the far end a large floor to ceiling cabinet. This is the pantry for the kitchen. While not a walk in pantry, with all the cabinet space in here it makes a sufficient pantry.

In the middle of the kitchen lies a small island with a few cabinets. Its definitely not the biggest island we have ever seen but the kitchen has a ton of counter space, so the size is perfect for just extra prep space.

On the front side of the kitchen, to the right as you walk in is the refrigerator. Just past that there is a gigantic “L” shaped counter that houses the sink sitting just under a window with views out to the front of the home. Below the sink is the dishwasher and on the opposite side of the counter is the stove and built in microwave.

Dining Room and Living Room

To the far side of the kitchen is an opening that leads into the dining room. The dining room is a nice big space that offers plenty of room for a large table and ample wall space if you have a hutch or buffet table you’d like to use to decorate the space. Behind the dining room table is the sliding glass door leading out onto the future back deck or patio.

From the dining room you can easy see and access the living room. You can also access the living room from the foyer as you walk into the home. Here there is a raised bar with space for about two stools just off the foyer looking into the kitchen. The living room itself is large and has several large windows along the back wall of the home. There is plenty of space in here where you can easily configure the furniture in any number of ways.

Laundry Room

This home is currently set up for a basement foundation and just off the living room is the access door to the stairs leading into the basement. Next to that as you start down the hallway in the laundry room. Immediately as you walk in, to the right, is a coat or cleaning closet. Washer and dryer hook ups are just beyond that.

Now one thing I wanted to point out… if you opted for a crawl space rather than the basement, then the extra space that would be gained from loosing that stairwell can be added here in the laundry room. You could easily use that extra space for a washbasin and counter space or even a place for a deep freezer.

All the way at the back of the laundry room is the door out into the garage. Since this is a model it is just a mock garage, however it would be a normal 2 car garage if you decided to build this home.

Secondary Bedrooms and Bathroom

Directly as you walk out of the laundry into the hallway, the first full bathroom sits just across the way. It has a single vanity and a shower and tub combo. There isn’t a linen closet directly in the bathroom but there is one a few feet away at the end of the hall, sitting in the middle of the 2 secondary bedrooms.

Both bedrooms are really great sizes and both have nice deep walk in closets. The first bedroom sits on the front side of the house and measures in at about 11ft 0in X 10ft 4in and has a great big window letting in a lot of natural light. The second bedroom sits to the right of the hallway on the back side of the house. It definitely has a bigger feel to it measuring in at 11ft 0in X 14ft 2in.

Master Suite

On the opposite end of the home (thus the split bedroom design), in between the kitchen and dining room is the master suite. The master bedroom itself sits on the front of the home with a great big window peering out into the front yard.

The room measures approximately 13ft 8in X 14ft 2in and has plenty of space for a king size bed, night stands and a couple of dressers if you wanted them. The master closet is huge! it sits right behind the door as you enter the main room and has more than enough space for a whole shopping center’s line of clothes.

The en-suite sits next to the closet and also has those really nice hickory cabinets. As you walk into the bathroom there is a large linen closet to the left before a large double vanity. Past the vanity is a large walk-in shower with both a removable shower head and rainfall shower head which is very, very nice.
