The Best Small House Design – The “Retreat”

There’s something about small houses that just makes them so appealing. Maybe it’s the challenge of fitting everything you need into a tiny space, or the fact that they’re often more affordable than larger homes. Whatever the reason, I can’t get enough of them! And this particular small house design is my new favorite. It’s cozy, sleek, and has everything you need without feeling cramped. If I could have a home like this, I would be one happy fellow!

We visited Terrace Homes in Friendship, Wisconsin and this small house design was one of my favorites… mostly because it smelled fantastic! Like a cherry tootsie pop! Hopefully you will love this home as much as I did, however, Terrace Homes only builds modular homes in WI. So if you are in love and don’t live in the area, well, you can still use this as inspiration to build something similar.

Small House Design Exterior

Outside of this home has a very distinct to look to it unlike most homes that we have seen lately. The front of the house has a massive porch that leads into the main living room via a large sliding glass door.

The porch is an option that you can get with this home if you did opt for it. Personally I would, just because it gives a whole lot of extra living space in what is already a small home.

However, I could easily see someone out here hanging out with a grill or some patio furniture and just taking in the scenery. Along the front of the home there are several windows that help brighten up the home with tons of natural light as well. 

As you move around to the right-hand side of the home, not only will you find some nice angles due to the elevation of the home, but you will also find a door leading out of the dining room area. This door could easily lead out into a future garage or a carport or even a small additional patio area. 

Moving around to the back of the home you will find a few more windows that peer out from both the laundry room as well as one of the bathrooms. 

Inside This Small House Design

As you step through the front door you are greeted with an open concept layout with views into the living room, the kitchen, and the dining room.

The Living Room

Now since this home is on the smaller side, they packed a lot into it. Therefore the living room, while spacious, is also on the smaller side. There are several options for different furniture arrangements depending on how creative you decide to get. But you do have plenty of room for a couple of couches, some end-tables as well as a nice spot to put your TV.

What is this spot you may be wondering. Well, it is right on the side of the partition wall that separates the living room from the stairwell down into the basement.

This partition wall sits on the left-hand side of the living room and offers a unique way to get down to additional storage or living space if you ended up finishing the basement. 

The Dining Room

To the right-hand side of the living room, you will find a small dining room area. This dining room area does have space for a table. However, I do not think it wouldn’t be an exceptionally large table.

The one that they showed in this model was a round table with about four seats. There are also three windows that surround the dining room area which also help provide some additional light as well as some views depending on your location. 

The Kitchen

Behind the living room you will find the kitchen area. The kitchen area is broken up into two sections and has additional space for a movable island. On the right-hand side of the kitchen, you will find an L-shaped counter which houses the stove, with a built-in microwave sitting just above it.  Additionally, a sink sits along the back wall with plenty of cabinets and drawers for storage. 

To the left-hand side of the kitchen, you will find the refrigerator as well as another small counter space along with some cabinets and drawers. 

The Secondary Bedroom, Bathroom and Laundry Room

Past the kitchen, you will come to a small communal area that provides access to the laundry room, the first full bathroom, as well as the first bedroom.

The laundry room does feature washer and dryer hookups that sit just below a nice size shelving unit. It also has a nice window looking out into the backyard. 

To the left of the laundry room, you will come into the first full bathroom. Here you will find a single vanity, the toilet as well as the shower and tub combo. 

You will also find the first full bedroom back in this part of the home. This bedroom sits along the left-hand side of the house and is a decent size.

It measures approximately 10ft 6in X 10ft 4in, with plenty of room for a large bed, a dresser and a couple of nightstands. It also has a window looking out into the side yard and a great big walk-in closet. 

The Master Suite

On the opposite side of the house, just behind the dining room, you will enter the master suite. This bedroom is close to the same size as the other one, just slightly bigger, measuring approximately 11ft 0in X 10ft 7in.

It also has plenty of room for a large bed, a king-sized one, as well as a dresser and a couple of nightstands. This bedroom does have one window that looks out towards the front of the home as well as a nice large closet with plenty of shelves. 

At the back of the master bedroom, you will find the ensuite. The ensuite features another large single vanity, a toilet, and a standalone shower.
